In its annual series devoted to "Technical monuments", the Czech Post has put into circulation on March 16, 2016, a new stamp evoking this time the 125th anniversary of the construction of the Petřín observation tower ("Petřínská rozhledna") and the funicular used to carry Prague inhabitants and tourists to the top of Petřín Hill.
A big thank you for these philatelic documents below regarding that stamp (13 CZK), designed by Adolf Absolon and engraved by Martin Srb, printed in sheet of 30 stamps !
This steel tower (63 meters high, 175 tons) dominates the Czech capital since its inauguration in 1891 on the occasion of the World Exhibition in Prague.
Inspired by the Eiffel Tower (opened in Paris two years ago), this observation tower (as well as a transmission tower) has however an octagonal section and is not based on four steel columns.
With a central elevator and two winding staircases (one for the way up and the other one for the way down), this tower is home, at its the lowest level, to a small museum dedicated to Jára Cimrman, this Czech fiction character who would have advised Gustave Eiffel to draw more flexible feet to his future tower...
The stamp is based on a drawing of this Petřín Tower dating from 1892 while the engraving on the envelope reproduces another drawing dating from 1890 by one of the architects of its structure, František Prášil...  http://timbredujura.blogspot.com/2016/03/125-years-of-petrin-observation-tower.html
