The 120th Anniversary of the Opening of Straka´s Academy
Issue of the commemorative postage stamp THE 120TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF STRAKA´S ACADEMY
On the 8th March, 2017 the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic will issue a commemorative postage stamp in the denomination of 24 CZK from the issue 120th anniversary of the opening of Straka´s Academy. The stamp portrays the building of Straka’s Academy viewed from the garden together with the main statue positioned in the left-hand side of the stamp.
Straka’s Academy is a Neo-Baroque building situated on the left bank of the Vltava river below Prague’s Letná. The building, designed by architect Václav Roštlapil, was built in 1891–1896. The opening ceremony was held on the 21st March, 1897. Straka’s Academy was initially used as a school for poor aristocratic children. It first served government purposes during the Nazi occupation. In 1945, it became the official seat of the government. The history of the building dates back to 1710 when the Imperial Privy Councillor Count Jan Petr Straka of Nedabylice and Libčany made a provision in his will for the establishment of an academy for the education of poor Czech aristocratic children. Straka’s Academy is now the main building of the Office of the Government. The building of Straka’s Academy is located in a garden built under the supervision of garden designer František Josef Thomayer. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and - together with the building of Straka’s Academy - as Czech Cultural Heritage.
The author of the design of the issue is the academic painter and graphic artist Marina Richterová.
The stamp, sized 40 x 23 mm has been printed by the Post Printing House in Prague by multicoloured offset in printing sheets of 50 pcs.
There will be 1 First Day Cover incl. commemorative cancellation The first day cover features the conference room of the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic. The cover has been printed by offset. The handstamp contains the motif of a pendant lamp from the interior of Straka’s Academy and the text: PRAHA, 8.3.2017.
The stamp is valid from 8th March, 2017.
