Personalities: Prof. RNDr. Antonín Holý (1936-2012) / Persönlichkeiten: Prof. RNDr. Antonín Holý (1936-2012)

Issue of the commemorative postage stamp
PERSONALITIES: PROF. RNDr. ANTONÍN HOLÝ (1936-2012)
On the 7th September, 2016 the Ministry of  Industry and Trade  of the Czech Republic will  issue a commemorative postage stamp in the denomination of 20 CZK from the series of Personalities: Prof.RNDr. Antonín Holý (1936-2012). The stamp portrays Prof. RNDr. Antonín Holý working with a measuring cylinder and a conical flask, with an enlarged image of the human immunodeficiency virus in the background.
Antonín Holý (1st September, 1936 – 16th July, 2012) was a pioneering Czech scientist of the 20th century. He specialised in the field of chemistry and cooperated on the development of important antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV and hepatitis B.
From 1954-59, he studied organic chemistry at the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague. From 1960, he trained at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry (IOCB) of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague and has been a researcher there since 1963. He became the Institute’s lead scientist in 1967, and from 1983 headed its working group for nucleic acids. In 1987, he became chief of the Department of Nucleic Acid Chemistry and from 1994 to 2002 he was head of the IOCB. He habilitated at the Faculty of Science, Palacký University in Olomouc in 2004 after publishing his dissertation “Acyclic nucleosides: ideas and reality”, and was appointed professor of organic chemistry at Palacký University in 2005.
From 1976, he collaborated on the development of new antiretroviral drugs with Erik De Clercq of the Rega Institute for Medical Research at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, who is the co-author of Holý’s 15 patents. The Web of Science results for Holý’s publications is 604 publications, 11,609 citations and an h-index of 49. Holý was also the author or co-author of 60 Czech and international patents.
The first drug developed by Holý’s team at the IOCB and the pharmaceutical company Léčiva was Duviragel for oral herpes. Czechoslovak and European pharmaceutical companies considered the development of drugs from the substances synthetised by Holý’s team as too expensive and time-consuming and were not willing to participate. The development was eventually started by the American pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers, but was discontinued as unpromising.
In 1990, the patents were bought by a small American company Gilead Sciences with only 15 staff members, joined by some scientists from Bristol-Myers who considered Holý’s substances as promising. In 1996, cidofovir (brand name Vistide) was approved for production in the United States and European Union as a treatment for cytomegalovirus retinitis. It has also shown efficacy in the treatment of herpes zoster and smallpox. In 2001, tenofovir disoproxil, marketed as Viread, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of HIV, and in 2008, for the treatment of hepatitis B. Adefovir (brand name Preveon) was another drug to be approved by the FDA for the treatment of HIV. In 1999, the FDA refused to approve it because of its serious adverse effects. Gilead Sciences continued to develop the drug for hepatitis B. The drug, marketed as Hepsera, was approved by the FDA in 2002. Tenofovir disoproxil/emtricitabine (brand name Truvada) is a fixed-dose combination of two antiretroviral drugs used for the treatment of HIV/AIDS (approved in 2004) and for the prevention of HIV infection (approved in 2012). Efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil, sold under the trade name Atripla among others, is a fixed-dose combination drug for the treatment of HIV infection, approved in 2006. Emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir (trade names Complera, Eviplera) is a fixed dose combination of antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV, approved in 2011. Further drugs are being developed or clinically tested.
The IOCB has received almost CZK 2 billion a year from Gilead Sciences for licence fees and patents resulting from Antonín Holý and his team’s work. In 2006, Gilead Sciences and the IOCB jointly established a new research centre for the development of new preparations. Gilead Sciences promised the IOCB a $1.1 million donation, to fund its operations and research for 5 years. In 2011, the contract was extended by another five years.
The author of the design of  the  issue  is  the academic painter and graphic artist Karel Zeman, the engraving of FDC are the work of the graphic artist and engraver  Miloš Ondráček.
The stamp, sized 23 x 40 mm  has been printed  by  the Post  Printing House in Prague  by multicoloured offsed in printing sheets of 50 pcs.
There  will be  1 First Day Cover incl. commemorative cancellation. The picture part of the cover shows the formula of a chemical compound, with the building of the IOCB in the background. The cover is  printed by recess print from flat plates. The handstamp features a hand administering a medication agains the virus portrayed in the background. and the text: Praha, 7.9.2016.
The stamp is valid  from 7th September, 2016.

PERSÖNLICHKEITEN: PROF. RNDR. ANTONÍN HOLÝ (1936 – 2012)
Antonín Holý (1. September 1936, Prag – 16.

Nature Protection: Zoological gardens - I / Naturschutz: Zoologische Gärten I.

Issue of the commemorative souvenir sheet:
NATURE PROTECTION: ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS I
On the 7th September, 2016 the Ministry of  Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic will  issue a commemorative souvenir sheet “Nature protection – Zoological Gardens I” with 4 stamps and 2 coupons.
Postage stamps:
1.    16 CZK – ZOO Jihlava - snow leopards with their offspring
2.    20 CZK – ZOO Olomouc - a pair of Barbary lions with babies and an outline of a herd of antelopes – South African oryxes in the background
3.    24 CZK – ZOO Dvůr Králové - a rare black rhino with a baby and a couple of hyena dogs in the front
4.    27 CZK – ZOO Prague - a herd of Przewalski’s horse with cubs
On two coupons and edges of the souvenir sheet are depicted other  rare sorts of animals living in our prominent zoological gardens.
The existence of the best known Czech zoological garden in Prague was marked by Czechoslovak, and later on Czech Post on several occasions, most recently in 2001 when the garden celebrated the 70th anniversary of its creation. This new miniature sheet gives an opportunity to introduce themselves also to other major zoos in the Czech Republic – ZOO Jihlava, ZOO Dvůr Králové and ZOO Olomouc.
The stamp with the highest face value of CZK 27 depicts a herd of Przewalski’s horse, which is the emblematic species of Prague Zoo. Last year, the zoo was declared the fourth best zoo in the world by the largest travel site TripAdvisor, based on the opinions of hundreds of thousands of its regular users. Prague Zoo found its way into the world elite in 2007 when the famous economic magazine Forbes ranked it as the seventh best zoological garden in the world. In 2016, Prague Zoo will celebrate the 85th anniversary of its creation.
The next, CZK 24 stamp presents the second largest Czech Zoo in Dvůr Králové, famous for the first African safari park in the country. This focus on African animals was the brainchild of Josef Vágner, the zoo’s director between 1965 and 1983 who organised several expeditions to Africa, resulting in many animals, especially ungulates, being brought into the collection. The stamp portrays a rare black rhino with a baby and a couple of hyena dogs in the front. In 2016, Dvůr Králové Zoo will celebrate the 70th anniversary of its creation.
The CZK 20 stamp is dedicated to Olomouc Zoo. It is located in a beautiful forested landscape at the foothills of the Lower Jeseník mountains. The stamp shows a pair of Barbary lions with babies and an outline of a herd of antelopes - South African oryxes in the background. The zoo keeps the largest herd of these ungulates in the Czech Republic. The zoo managed to breed the Amur leopard. There are only several Amur leopards in the wild today. The zoo was opened to the public in 1956 and in 2016, it will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its creation.
The last, CZK 16 stamp presents Jihlava Zoo. This garden is located at a place close to the city centre, and yet it contains forested hillsides, meadows, rocks and water areas surrounding the small river weaving through the zoo. The zoo is the home of over 200 exotic species of animals, with a special focus on apes and felines, including snow leopard portrayed on the stamp. The zoo managed to repeatedly reproduce this rare species, also called irbis. The stamp shows a pair of leopards with their offspring. Jihlava Zoo keeps the largest collection of South American marmosets in the Czech Republic
The authors of the  design of the issue  are ac. painters  and graphic artists Libuše and Jaromír Knotek,  the  engravings of the sheet and of the FDC are the work of  the graphic artist and engraver  Martin Srb.
The souvenir sheets  with stamps, sized 40 x 50 mm  and coupons sized 40 x 23 mm have been printed by the Post  Printing House in Prague  by  coloured offset combined with black engraving.
There  will be  4  First Day Covers incl. commemorative cancellations. On the cover with the 16 CZK stamp (1) are depicted  the South American marmosets, the cover with the 20 CZK stamp (2) shows the Amur leopards, on the one with 24 CZK stamp (3) is depicted the rarest and critically endangered mammal in the world, the northern white rhino with a baby born in Zoo Dvůr Králové in 2000. It was a huge event and the baby rhino was called “the Baby of the Millennium”. On the cover with the 27 CZK (4)  is a lowland gorilla, probably the best known species kept in Prague Zoo thanks to the media attention given to the birth of female gorilla Moja (Moya) in 2004.It was the first baby gorilla born in the Czech Republic. The covers are printed by the recess print from flat plates. The motif  of the handstamp are side views of: 1) the head of a snow leopard and the text: Jihlava -, 7.9.2016 -  to the 16 CZK stamp, 2) the head of South African oryx  and the text: Olomouc, 7.9.2016 to the 20 CZK stamp, 3) the head of  a black rhino and the text: Dvůr Králové, 7.9.2016 to the 24 CZK stamp   and 4) the head of Przewalski´s horse and the text: Praha, 7.9.2016 to the 27 CZK stamp.
The stamps are valid from 7th September, 2016.

- Logo Lipno  /  0054  /  0482;
- Logo Lipno  /  0055  /  0507.
