GERRIT DOU: YOUNG WOMAN ON A BALCONY – COMMON CZECH-LIECHTENSTEIN STAMP
On the 7th September, 2016 the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic will issue a commemorative postage stamp in the denomination of 27 CZK from the series Gerrit Dou – Young woman on a balcony – common Czech-Liechtenstein issue. The stamp features Gerrit Dou’s Young Woman on a Balcony, a work of art donated by Prince John II of Liechtenstein to the then private Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts, which directly preceded today’s National Gallery.
Gerrit Dou, also known as Gerrard, Gerard, Douw or Dow (7th April, 1613, Leiden – 9th February, 1675, Leiden) was a Dutch painter. He studied with engraver Bartholomew Dolend, glass painter Peter Kouwhoorn, and eventually in Rembrandt’s painting workshop where he spent three years. Although he began as a portrait painter, he became famous as a painter of landscapes with a great sense of detail. He used a magnifying lens, concave mirror and specially designed miniature brushes to create his paintings.
Engravings of the stamp, based on Gerrit Dou’s painting, and engravings of FDC are the work of graphic artist and engraver Václav Fajt.
The stamp, sized 40 x 50 mm has been printed by the Post Printing House in Prague by five-colours recess print from flat plats in printing sheets of 4 pcs.
There will be 1 First Day Cover incl. Commemorative cancellation. The picture part of the cover shows a fragment of Karel Škréta’s painting of the Holy Family with St. Catherine and St. Barbara. This work was donated to today’s National Gallery in Prague by John II of Liechtenstein.The cover is printed by recess print from flat plates. The dominant features of handstamp are the artistically designed initials G D (Gerrit Dou) and the text: “PRAHA, 7.9.2016”.
The stamp is valid from 7th September, 2016.

GERRIT DOU: – JUNGE FRAU AUF EINEM BALKON – GEMEINSCHAFTSAUSGABE (TSCHECHIEN - LIECHTENSTEIN)
Gerrit Dou, auch Gerrard, Gerard, Douw oder Dow (7. April 1613, Leiden - 9. Februar 1675, Leiden) war ein niederländischer Maler. Er ist bei dem Kunststecher Bartholomeus Dolendo, dem Glasmaler Pieter Klouwenhorn und schließlich in der Malerwerkstatt von Rembrandt in die Lehre begeben, wo er drei Jahre verbracht hat. Er hat als Porträtist begonnen, aber später ist er zum Stillleben übergangen. Er ist durch seine Sorgfältigkeit und sein Interesse für Details berühmt geworden, er hat auch mit Lupe, Konvexspiegel und speziellen Miniaturpinseln gemalt.
Briefmarke: das Werk des Autors Gerrit Dou - Junge Dame auf einem Balkon. Es handelt sich um eines der Kunstwerke, die der Fürst Johann II. von Liechtenstein der damaligen privaten Gesellschaft der patriotischen Kunstfreunde, der direkten Vorgängerin der heutigen Nationalgalerie gewidmet hat.
Ersttagsbrief: ein Fragment aus dem Gemälde von Karel Škréta – Die Heilige Familie mit den Heiligen Katharina und Barbara. Dieses Werk wurde der heutigen Nationalgalerie in Prag von Johann II. von Liechtenstein geschenkt.
Auf dem Stempel dominieren die grafisch bearbeiteten Initialen G D (Gerrit Dou) und der Text: PRAHA, 7. 9. 2016
