Issue of the commemorative postage stamp ANNIVERSARY OF THE 17th NOVEMBER
On the 5th November, 2014 the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic will issue a commemorative postage stamp in the denomination of 13 CZK - Anniversary of the 17th November. The stamp features symbols of statehood - the state colours and the state emblem (the stylisation is inspired by the Gothic Parler’s emblem). They are accompanied by dates and the text “We do not forget” referring to the given events.
The 17th November belongs to the major dates in the history of the Czech Republic.
In 1939, the Nazis took a brutal action against Czech university students. Fifty years later, the Velvet Revolution started.
The anti-occupation mood intensifying in late 1939 culminated on the 15th November when people decided to commemorate Jan Opletal, a student of medicine at Charles University deadly shot at a demonstration held on the day of the 21st anniversary of the creation of Czechoslovakia.
During the night of the 16th and 17th November, German policemen assisted by SS troops mercilessly carried out the order of the German Führer. All ten Czech universities were closed, nine student leaders were executed in Prague-Ruzyně, and 1,200 students were beaten and sent to concentration camps. These events led to the declaration of the 17th November as the International Student Day in London in 1941. This is the only internationally recognized holiday originated in the Czech Republic.
On the 17th November 1989, one week after the fall of the Berlin wall, the Velvet Revolution started in Prague. At four o’clock in the afternoon, groups of students gathered in front of the seat of the Faculty of Medicine in Prague’s Albertov to commemorate the tragic events that had happened fifty years before that time. The initially calm demonstration soon turned into a fight for freedom, democracy and political reforms.
The author of the design of the issue is the academic painter and graphic artist Jan Kavan, the engravings of the FDC are the work of the graphic artist and engraver Václav Fajt.
The stamp, sized 23 x 30 mm has been printed by the Post Printing House in Prague by multicoloured offset in printing sheets of 50 pcs.
There will be 1 First Day Cover incl. commemorative cancellation. In the picture part of the cover are depicted policemen with shields and a rose; although the picture refers to the events at the Národní Třída street, it is a symbol of a confrontation between violence and love. The cover is printed by recess print from flat plates in blue-grey. On the postmark are pieces of barbed wire symbolizing suppression of freedom and revolts against it and the text: Praha, 5.11.2014
The stamp is valid from 5th November, 2014.
