Issue of the definitive postage stamp identified with a letter „A“ CHRISTMAS – JOSEF LADA
On the 5th November, 2014 the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic will issue a definitive postage stamp with imprinted letter „A“ – Christmas. The letter „A“ corresponds to the price of Ordinary Letter – Standard up to 50 g in domestic service – current price according to the Price List of Basic Postal Services– at present amounting to CZK 13.
The stamp features the 1942 picture “Bethlehem in Winter” by Josef Lada, used by the courtesy of the National Gallery in Prague. This motif already appeared on Czech Post’s 2013 New Year envelope.
In the Christian tradition, Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Together with Easter and Pentecost, it is a major Christian holiday.
Most Czech people mistakenly consider Christmas Eve (24th of December) to be the culmination of Christmas. Some people also include Advent, a season preceding Christmas, into Christmas. Christmas is accompanied by a number of traditions, such as Christmas tree, nativity scene, gifts brought by Little Jesus, Christmas sweets. Some of these traditions date back to the pre-Christian era and are related to the celebration of solstice that takes place in the same days. The original, religious meaning of Christmas has however almost disappeared and Christmas is considered as a major public holiday.
The author of the graphic arrangement of the stamp is Ivana Havránková.
The stamp, sized 30 x 23 mm has been printed by the Post Printing House in Prague by multicoloured offset in printing sheets of 50 pcs.
There will be 1 First Day Cover incl. Commemorative cancellation. In the picture part of the cover is a detail of the picture – the Little Jesus. The cover is printed by offset in dark blue. On the postmark is a comet and the text: Hrusice, 5. 11. 2014.
The stamp is valid from 5th November, 2014.
